Replicas of gold finger bars
and a chain - the originals were found in the wreck of the Atocha. The
bars exhibit Roman numerals indicating their karat quality, and stamped
royal tax seals. The Roman numerals are accompanied by spots stamped in.
Each spot equals a quarter karat. The largest bar is 8 inches long and
on the left end, a piece was cut off with a chisel for making cob coins.
The bar second from the top has a small "assayer's bite" - a notch removed
to test the quality. The bottom three bars are made by Ocean
Scan Systems.
The chain is identical to the
ones featured on the cover of the March 1987 issue of LIFE MAGAZINE.
Chains like this were worn by Spanish royalty.
Replica "splash bars". The originals
were found in the wreck of the Atocha. The larger one is about 5 inches
in diameter, and very thick and heavy. The two replica splash bars were
made by Ocean Scan Systems.
